Torrey Summer is a pop-duo on the rise in Los Angeles, California. As if we weren’t sold by their angelic harmonies and catchy hooks, it turns out these girls are just as passionate about veganism and sustainable fashion as they are their music! Naturally we couldn’t help but want to learn more about this dynamic duo and what they’re all about.
Q: Tell us about yourselves.
We are sisters, and have been singing and writing songs together for as long as we can remember. We grew up in Oceanside, California but have been living in The City of Angeles for six years now. California is our muse, and music is the vessel she comes through.
Q: Who are some of your biggest influences?
The first record we ever owned was Alanis Morisette “Jagged Little Pill”. What an incredible woman who speaks her mind and isn’t afraid to be exactly who she is. We are also very much inspired by Tracy Chapman – her message, her captivating presence, her authenticity.
Q: What is your favorite part about doing what you do?
Being able to write what’s on your heart and in turn have someone listen, get lost in, and relate to your experiences is truly a gift. We also love the part of our work that allows us to create with the people we love the most. Some of our best friends have produced our songs and made our music videos with us. Music brings people together, and that’s what gets us most excited about what we do.
Q: What got you into sustainable fashion and how does it play into your music?
We spent a great deal of time shopping at garage sales and second hand stores growing up. On Saturday mornings our mom would load us up into the van with donuts and a newspaper, and we would set out on a hunt looking for vintage finds. We continued thrifting our whole lives, but it wasn’t until recently when we watched a documentary called “The True Cost” that our eyes were opened to not only how our clothing is actually made, but the environmental effects that occur; from clothing landfills, to poisoned water sources from the leather industry. We made a commitment after that to cut out all “fast fashion” and now second hand shopping has taken on a whole new meaning for us! When we do purchase something new, we make sure it is ethically and sustainably made. Including everything we wear for our shows, photoshoots and music videos.
Q: How did you learn about Matt & Nat and do you own any Matt & Nat products?
We are always on the lookout for beautiful and sustainable vegan fashion, so we were so excited when we found out about Matt & Nat on Instagram. Everything looks and feels like real leather which is amazing. We have the Hope bag and Vera wallet which we absolutely love. Been eyeing a few pieces from the new collection as well!
Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
A friend recently told us “everything is made up”, and it couldn’t be more true. We create the lives we want to live, there are no rules, so just go out and get exactly what you want.
Q: What can we expect to see next from Torrey Summer?
We have a few new singles that we are currently in the studio working on, with music videos to follow! Stay up to date on tour and everything Torrey Summer on our Social Media (we are big Instagram lovers
